The Different Stages Of Operation In A Water Treatment System

Access to clean and safe water is a basic necessity for the people on the planet. Water from different sources must be first treated to make it fit for use in homes and other buildings. This is accomplished through the installation of water treatment systems. Since the water can be from different sources, it can have different levels of contaminants which will need to be removed or filtered out for the different purposes that the water is to be employed in. The water treatment system has a number of different stages through which the raw water must be processed. These stages are as follows:

1.       Coagulation: The raw water is collected in a reservoir or water tank, after which, coagulation is carried out to remove the majority of the contaminants. Chemicals may be added for this purpose which remove the fine particles by combining them with the heavy particles in the water which settle at the bottom of the tank by the action of gravity.

2.       Flocculation: In this step, the water is sent into a chamber where it is slowly churned with long-chain polymers which attach to the residue dirt and micro particles and create visible particles which can be separated out.

3.       Sedimentation: Post the flocculation, the semi-treated water is sent for sedimentation. The water from the flocculation chamber is drained into another chamber where it is circulated and then allowed to settle. During the settling process, the solid particles that remain in the water sink to the bottom of the tank to form a sludge.

4.       Chlorination: In the final stage of the treatment of water in the wastewater treatment system, the water is filtered using sand filters or multi-bed filters. Chlorination and UV filtration of the water may also be carried out if it is to be used for domestic purposes such as cleaning and in the toilets.

5.       Supply: Thereafter, the treated water is supplied though a separate network of pipes and water pipe connector and supplied for utilization. Often, the pipes for the treated water are of a different colour to indicate the different quality of the water being supplied through them.
